It examines gravity, forces and balance. The exhibition has a central sculpture which pulls everything into its centre; it revolves around itself. The sculpture also influences how the audience can experience the exhibition, as they have to orbit around this central piece, just as the printed photographs do. The prints also reflect on each other, as each wall mirrors its opposite.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe project began as an exploration of space and material, as I examined scale. I experimented with materials in a small space, sending the three dimensional into the two dimensional. The mirrors within the exhibition serve as a means of reflection for the viewers; the exhibition continues to balance and re-balance, to mirror and re-mirror itself, thus the audience becomes a part of the work. It was a natural progression that organic mediums be used to create the work and retain its environmental integrity.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBridget devised methods of using charcoal powder to print the unique and transient patterns left on the shore after the tide had receded.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe images have a raw quality, which seem to retain the very essence of the sea.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eResearching natural mediums to print with, Bridget experimented with cuttlefish ink which had very satisfying results. It seemed the obvious way to capture some of the beauty in the seaweeds washed up on the shore: from the sea to the sea.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe work is intended to be a celebration of nature in its purity, indulging in the wonder and magnificence of what is often taken for granted.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSadly it has become impossible to ignore how precious and rare nature in its unadulterated form is. Most clumps of seaweed washed on our shores are now threaded with the insidious scourge of plastic.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis prompted the idea of the collaborative piece with Monika Drabot and Flexagon, Ghost Net.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ca href=\"https://www.flexagon-music.com\"\u003eFlexagon\u003c/a\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlexagon is a Guernsey-based sound mangler and musical instrument collec-tor. He is also an experienced DJ, music producer, sound engineer and composer.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePeople moving through the gallery trigger an ever-changing soundscape. Flexagon uses sound bites from popular culture along with abstract musical motifs made with rubbish cleared from Guernsey’s coastline by the Clean Earth Trust. However, my intention was to seek out those who are; to gain a better understanding. I am an artist and I have a passion for people and their stories. The author Gilly Carr has worked tirelessly to uncover and present the stories of often forgotten islanders, whose lives were indelibly touched by trauma and loss. Annie Barrows shares her trepidation as an author and resolves to find a universal message in her book (The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) - that of respect and of a deeper understanding in our shared humanity. Throughout their working practise, artists such as Jeni Snell and Chris Foss have been inspired to use the iconic German fortifications in their paintings, to illustrate their imposing nature on the beautiful cliffs and coastline of our islands but with an added personal twist. Both emanate from the same source and I doubt whether one is more \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003esignificant than the other. When inspired I draw. (I am rarely inspired to draw from life, from reality.) \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, I have no pre-conceived plan of the outcome of the image when I first put pencil to paper. Once I commence painting, I feel my way into the image and into colour. It is not a conscious action but a sensation that \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eencapsulates me physically, predominately in the area of my chest, as I \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eregard my palette. I then feel drawn to particular colours, each image is a mystery journey from its outset to its conclusion. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt its conclusion I regard the finished painting much like an individual in a gallery ‘seeing it’ for the first time. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI feel I need to look at it many many times, as if to familiarise myself with it. To a degree, (if I like it) it’s a little like a love affair. I need to be close to it for several days. Each time I look I see and feel something new. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIs there a hidden narrative? Possibly. I am aware that as I paint sometimes a story evolves in my head but not necessarily one that can be conveyed to any viewer. I may give certain elements a voice. This is particularly true in the series on show. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy medium is and always has been watercolour though I do not use it in the conventional sense. My work has often been thought to be done in anything but! The main reason for this is the sheer intensity of colour. I quite frequently use the paint directly from the tube without dilution. In the main I work with very fine brushes as much of it is finely detailed. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhere does my inspiration come from? I’m not sure that in the style of work I create that I can say it comes from anywhere except from within. I do not and cannot paint to order. Over the years I have been asked many times if I have travelled to South America or Africa. I have even had reference made to Aboriginal art as my paintings seemed to be reminiscent of the artwork of these places. I have been delighted and a little proud to think that people make such a connection but The answer is No. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever I am unsurprised by the apparent link. We are human beings living on the same earth and I believe the creative river flows about us all. The style I have, has evolved since I started painting aged 18. I have not \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003estudied art. I appreciate it but I do not spend time poring over art books or going into galleries, though if the \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eopportunity arises I am happy to do the latter. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe opposite can be said of my poetry which is most definitely inspired by my environment and the people who live within it. I do also write poems that are somewhat surreal in content which emerge from the same place as the paintings and it is also true that on occasion a poem will inspire a painting and vice versa. The only \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003esimilarity between the two art forms for me is that with painting, I start with a line and follow it not knowing where it will lead and with my poetry a first line comes into my head and I follow it. I do know when something, a person, a situation will evolve into a poem. as the line arrives often in a given moment. It may take hours or days before I put that line down to evolve and grow into a fully fledged poem. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI write open verse so there are no restrictions and much the same with the paintings, I paint in my own style so am not compelled to follow any format. There was no single bolt of inspiration. Mostly there is no one around, you appear to have the island to yourself. Using just one synthesiser and imagining Bordeaux in the morning, I composed Bordeaux 7am. Buoyed by the online reaction to this ambient piece, I moved on to working on St Peter Port 1am. My first experience writing for traditional instruments it includes violins, violas, cellos, Rhodes piano and bass, along with found sound. It was then, and still is, easily my most ambitious work. I made a recording at St Peter Port harbour and enjoyed how the captured audio interacted serendipitously with the music. This, together with the study of aerial photographs and my personal experience of archaeological investigation, has resulted in depictions on canvas of not only the shapes of the geological landscape, but also the impact that political, historical and social circumstances had on the forms and functions of the buildings and field systems that helped shape the landscape through time.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePolitical conflict or the perceived threat of invasion has remained a strong theme throughout the history of the island and I have included the marks left by Iron Age inhabitants of the island as a reminder that although technology and building practice may change, some social values do not. We share and shared the need to protect, shelter and defend our families and communities. The Vale Castle, Les Tranquesous and Kings Road are examples of how we have moved from pre-history through into the modern era by using and adapting the same prominent position in the landscape to survive.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course nature and the forces of nature have played a hugely significant role in shaping or impacting on ourselves and the environment; as we progress through time, it remains a constant driving force and our efforts to control or reclaim land for ourselves often fail. The stone, brick and concrete structures humans build eventually decay allowing nature to take back some of its territory; and in doing so changing our perception of the form and function of these marks in the landscape. By using strong, bold colours to indicate the power that is still present in some of these structures, and line and texture to make a contrast between the material structures and the natural elements, my intention is to convey a sense of tension and unease in some images and conversely a sense of harmony with nature and the ebb and flow of time through others. He used to encourage his eldest daughter and I to try to “out draw/paint” each other, from as far back as I can remember, and then our parents would give us a score that evening. I’m pretty sure it was a way of keeping us busy and quiet, but the side effect was we both learnt a lot about colour and interpretation from an early age and also learnt to love art! (I won’t bring up the mock boxing ring they used to set up for us when we were fighting.. but Michelle is still one of my favourite people!) \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was lucky enough to attend a high school in Harare with an incredible art department, and was fortunate to have a teacher who gave everything she had to give to her class, and as a result most of us received A’s for our O levels. The days spent in her art department were the days I lived for.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFast forward to adulthood and it’s a blur of interior-design, graphic design, a little ceramic painting and having children, and then back to 3 years of private tutoring, again with an incredible lady who improved my techniques and ironed out strange and bad habits. This is the period where I built up the courage to tackle “faces” because it’s the one aspect of art where you’re either “right or wrong!” ( well that’s my opinion, anyway) I absolutely love portraiture, especially painting eyes. I love abstracts too, and that’s how some of my portraits evolved into abstract faces, but I am hell bent on making sure the person is still recognisable even if they are a swirl of unusual colours and shapes. My happiest days are spent painting, with my favourite music floating around me, I lose track of time completely. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEarly in my career I received commissions to paint high profile South African politicians, including Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Jacob Zuma and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I wasn’t sure my zoomed in/close up, huge face studies would be well received; however my fears were allayed when the \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOliver Tambo portrait, which is massive and entirely Mr Tambo’s face, was chosen to hang in The Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library. The other large portraits also hang in prominent parliamentary buildings. So my love of faces has paid off! \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy goal is to get back to painting full time, my happy place is in front of an easel. One was of William Le Lacheur and the other was of his ship The Monarch, together they hang in the foyer of Forest School.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe portrait of William Le Lacheur intrigued me and as she was always willing and happy to share her enthusiasm for the subject, Joan told me more about this famous Guernsey man and his endeavours.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe more I found out about him, the more I realised that not many people knew this story and so began a journey to reach William Le Lacheur’s Costa Rica – a journey that was realised last January through the Guernsey Arts\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eCommission when I set off for San Ramon for a three week art residency. Whilst in San Ramon I lived with a local family, which had a space to paint in and\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003ecurated a pop-up exhibition of my sketches in San Ramon Regional Museum.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThroughout 2019, as part of their ongoing collaboration with Art for Guernsey, 16 local schools also studied William Le Lacheur’s legacy. The pupils produced artworks inspired by his lifetime achievements in Costa Rica. The project also included a Football Festival where hundreds of children played with their own designed shirts inspired by the special relationship between Costa Rica and Guernsey. At this point in time a lot of focus was on the millennium and like other people I felt like I wanted to create something to mark this point in time, but wanted it to be meaningful. After some consideration I decided the best way to do this for me personally was to attempt to capture the year where I was, in Guernsey, by producing a plein air painting every day at a different location on the island. Some days were easier than others, but the project as a whole taught me a lot about materials, my practice and self-discipline. The project seemed to really connect with people on and off the island. The collection of work was displayed at the Millennium Arts Centre, the Eisteddfod exhibition and St Pierre Park hotel. On New Year’s Eve 2009, we were on Lihou with a group of friends and it struck me that it had been 10 years since the millennium project. I thought carefully then decided to repeat the challenge, this time allowing myself the use of photographs for reference as and when needed each day. created a website and uploaded each days painting in order to reach a wider audience. Almost as soon as I had completed 2010’s challenge I had subconsciously decided that I would repeat the challenge in 2020. I intially thought I would use oils, but decided the logistics of watercolour would be easier to handle on a day to day basis. I also felt that there was much more to explore with this wonderful medium. Who could have foreseen on January 1st how this year would pan out? What the pandemic has shown me is how lucky we are to live on this special island. It has been really lovely to hear how my paintings of Guernsey have meant such a lot to people on and off island. With a final\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003epublic vote, Artist Chris Simcox was chosen to recreate his concept on the Piano and\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ehas produced an extraordinary Art work, which depicts a walk-through Guernsey\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003elandscape from dawn to dusk. The painting is of a bright nature colourful a full of life.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe images on the piano creates a movement from one place to another in a fluid and\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emusical way. The piano is not only beautiful as a work of visual public art it also serves as a musical\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003einstrument filling the space with sound and energy. The piano will be placed at the\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eairport for the public to see and musicians to have an opportunity to play. All around\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ethe world there are beautiful pianos placed in public spaces, bringing a lively\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eatmosphere in the area. They’re quite good at transporting us relatively quickly from A to Z - (except at commuting times) - but like all time machines they cut us off from the times and places in between, giving us only superficial glimpses of what we pass by.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe more we rush the more we are subject to the omissions and constraints of time travel. In our cars we lose meaningful connection - missing out on most of the the sensory possibilities that come from exploring the places in between our departure and destination points. Life and lives pass quickly by. We miss the happenings that are possible with a slow walk. We miss engaging with nature and people. Walking is, or certainly can be, a meditation that transcends the narrow limitations of contemporary living - epitomised by our consumer lifestyles and drivers’ mindsets.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo appreciate nature and the landscape you just have to get out of the house or car and become a walker - you don’t have to be a photographer. In fact a too obsessive relationship with camera gear and obtaining the ‘right’ shot can impose its own limitations on our engagement with the environment, especially when, wittingly or not, photographers are working to visual formulae promoted by the photographic industry and media.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe real world isn’t a picture frozen in time - it’s a continually evolving process that photographs can only allude to. Photographs don’t capture sounds or smells but they can act as mnemonic devices, recalling those other sensory experiences.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe key to photography’s power is its relationship with some of the visual aspects of memory - so much of which is recalled in the mind’s eye. Photographs stimulate the visual cortex of the brain - this is why they can appeal to those who did not take them.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘Being a photographer gives me a very good excuse to leave the car behind and to record my engagement with the Guernsey people and landscape, which in so many respects I still see in a traditional way - I guess because I am a child of the 1950s - with a visual education that took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhether I record fragments of Guernsey’s history or figments of what I see as Guernsey’s collective imagination, photography gives gives me the opportunity to see a more nuanced Guernsey - seeing the familiar in a different light and the new or not so familiar in corners otherwise too obscure to be seen from a passing vehicle.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGuernsey born, Mark Windsor studied photography at the London College of Printing where he obtained a Foundation Diploma in Visual Communication. Mark then went on to receive a Diploma in Creative Photography, Class 2:1, 1979-82 awarded jointly by the then Trent Polytechnic and Derby Lonsdale College, studying with John Blakemore and Paul Hill. He studied for an MPhil in Documentary and Community Photography at Lancaster University 1988-90 and has practiced mostly as an amateur photographer ever since. Bar one virtual exhibition organised in Berlin he has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions only in Guernsey, and has participated in and contributed to several of the Guernsey Photography Festivals.
