Plans for the island’s celebrations to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 70 years of service have been announced, with an exciting opportunity to design Guernsey’s Platinum Jubilee flag launching today as part of the occasion.

There will be a four-day bank holiday to commemorate and celebrate the Queen’s 70 years of service in June. Proposed events and legacy projects in Guernsey will align with the programme of official events held in the UK over the bank holiday weekend, to allow the people of Guernsey to be part of the Jubilee weekend.

To celebrate this historic occasion, the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture is launching a competition for islanders to design a unique Guernsey Platinum Jubilee flag. The winning flag will be sent to Her Majesty The Queen on behalf of the island.

Individuals, schools, and community groups are invited to work up their proposals for a flag. The deadline for submissions is 11th March 2022. Full details of the competition can be found at www.platinumjubilee.gg with printed copies available at Beau Sejour and Guernsey Museum at Candie.

Plans for the four-day bank holiday weekend in June include, the lighting of the Jubilee beacon at Castle Cornet, The Platinum Party at the Palace at Government House; a family fun afternoon with movies and entertainment before the screening of the evening concert at Buckingham Palace. Featuring some of the world’s best entertainers, the concert will be shown live on the big screen in the grounds of Government House, supported by local brass bands and special guests on Saturday 4th June.

Arts Sunday, Platinum Jubilee Celebration, organised by Guernsey Arts, featuring stalls, music and entertainment will take place on Sunday 5th June from 10am – 4pm along the seafront in St Peter Port.

Legacy projects will see Parish Jubilee planting displays; with each parish invited to plant a Jubilee display in a prominent position to win a Platinum Jubilee Floral Guernsey discretionary award. In conjunction with the Floral Guernsey Community Competition 2022.

The Weighbridge Mast will fly the winning Platinum Jubilee Guernsey flag, and be decorated in Jubilee bunting and feature a Platinum Jubilee emblem planting display on the roundabout in St Peter Port.

Island schools will benefit from the Queen's Green Canopy tree planting ‘a tree for every class’ project and the Committee for Education Sport & Culture will give a gift for school children; every child in full-time education will receive a Jubilee commemorative 50p coin in a presentation pack.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, said:

‘The four-day bank holiday weekend in June will be an historic occasion as Her Majesty The Queen becomes the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. We have been developing plans so that the Guernsey community can enjoy the occasion, including the exciting launch of our competition today to design the island’s Platinum Jubilee flag. We hope we’ll receive lots of creative designs and look forward to announcing the winner, which will then be sent to Her Majesty as a tribute from the island.’
