ADÈLE, BETWEEN TWO TIDES

ADÈLE, BETWEEN TWO TIDES marks the 50th anniversary of François Truffaut’s THE STORY OF ADÈLE H. (1975), starring award-winning actress Isabelle Adjani in the lead role portraying Adèle Hugo. The documentary returns to Guernsey, where most of the original film was shot, to honour the people who helped bring the production to life, from local theatre actors and crowd extras to carpenters who constructed sets, as well as members of the police and fire brigade who contributed to on-set scenes.

Through new interviews, archival material and personal recollections, former participants share their memories of the production, the excitement of working with an international film crew, and the sometimes humorous challenges of filming with animals, including dogs and horses. The documentary celebrates and explores the cultural impact of the film and what it meant, and still means, for Guernsey to play a role in cinema history.

Fifty years on, the film also revisits iconic locations as they appear today, pairing past footage with present-day reflections from those who took part. The documentary serves as a heartfelt tribute to a cinematic classic and to the island community at the heart of its creation.
