Island Memories Project: Liberation 80 Foyer Display
Our Islanders have so many tales to tell. The Island Memories Project aims to record these accounts and create a permanent digital archive so that future generations can listen to and learn from the people of the Bailiwick that came before them.
In addition to recording personal experiences, it became obvious during the process of recording interviews that there were a lot of stories that had been handed down through the generations. This treasure trove of accounts led to the project's expansion to include second-hand reports from surviving family members.
The Island Memories Project: Liberation 80
To launch this initiative, Guernsey Museums & Galleries has partnered with BBC Radio Guernsey for the first phase of the project: Liberation 80. In this phase, we have been recording the experiences of islanders around World War Two. Whether they experienced occupation, deportation, evacuation, internment, or military service, each experience is unique and deserves to be remembered.
In honour of the 80th Anniversary of Liberation, and inspired by the stories shared by participants, our foyer display shares clips from the project's first phase of interviews alongside items from the era.
This display is part of The Liberation Trail.
