MOZART’S Requiem and Motets, presented by the Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Requiem in D minor, K.626
Motets: Veni Sancte Spiritus • Sancta Maria, Mater Dei. Jesu, wahrer Gottesohn • Ave verum corpus, K.618 • Laudate Dominum (from Vesperae solennes de Confessore, K.339)
Few composers speak so directly to the human soul as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and few works in all of music carry the same aura of mystery, beauty, and emotional power as his Requiem, written in the final weeks of his life and left unfinished at his death.
From the hushed, ominous opening to the power of the Dies irae and the aching supplication of the Lacrimosa, the Requiem is music of extraordinary dramatic force. Yet it is equally intimate: a deeply personal statement in which fear, grief, faith, and consolation coexist.
The first half of the concert will include five radiant motets that reveal Mozart's unmatched gift for sacred lyricism, including one of his first compositions at the age of twelve, Veni Sancte Spiritus, Ave verum corpus, composed just months before Mozart's death and Laudate Dominum, whose soaring soprano line floats above gentle choral responses in one of Mozart's most sublime moments of praise.
Together, these works form a journey from the beginning to the ending of his life showing Mozart at his most human and his most divine music that speaks across centuries, inviting us to listen, to reflect, and to be profoundly moved.
