“An artwork is not complete until it is received by others. Art lives in our
response. The spectator, the listener, is as important as the doer.” - Helen Martineau, Prodigal Daughters.

The Rectory at St Peter’s Church and the Gate House Gallery are pleased to present
Response, an exhibition of painting and sculpture by the Split Collective.
A response is a reply, an answer, a reaction. It implies correspondence, connection,
conversation. A response, be it an affirmation, a question, a defence or rebuttal, can be the building block of a meaningful relationship, an opportunity for enlightenment or just the chance to engage in playful banter. The eighty-odd works of sculpture, painting, drawing and print by forty-four artists which make up Response are an eclectic, original mix that reflects a robust exchange of ideas, thoughts and possibilities and an invitation to join a larger conversation.

Response is the first exhibition of Split Collective’s 2026 season. Opening in Guernsey on 29th May, it will travel to London in August.

Opening Times:
Rectory @ St Peter’s Church, 31st May to 16th August, weekends only, 10am to 4pm.

Gate House Gallery 30th-31st May and 6th/7th June, 10am-4pm

The public and the visiting artists are invited to explore the garden and the meadow surrounding the Rectory. The gardens are 150 years old and the meadow, which is glebe land, has been extant for many centuries. Still very much a work in progress, it is a place to feed the soul.

“It is a great pleasure to be able to host the Split Collective’s Response
Exhibition. Every day and in so many ways we are all presented with a myriad of
sensory invitations that enrich our lives. It is perhaps the gift and skill of the artist
that seeks to capture of and express a response to these stimuli.” - Adrian Datta, Rector of St Peter’s Church.

“It is a privilege to welcome the Split Collective to our gallery. Hosting artists of
this calibre is vital for the continued growth of our cultural landscape. By bridging
the gap between the UK and the Channel Islands, and other countries, we
provide our community with direct access to the evolving dialogues of the
modern art world. Exhibitions like this do more than just hang art on walls; they
spark conversation, challenge our perceptions, and enrich the cultural fabric of
our island.” - Adam Stephens, Director of the Gate House Gallery
